The trip
A week-long East African safari holiday for families, in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, two of the world’s most acclaimed wildlife habitats. If you want to witness the Great Migration this Tanzania family holiday is the trip for you.
The experience
Arriving at Kilimanjaro airport you’ll be transferred to the lovely Gibbs Farm, in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, half way between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. Established in the 1920s as a coffee plantation, Gibb’s Farm has retained its historical charm and is renowned for its birdlife and seriously good food; you can help harvest vegetables, bake bread and enjoy coffee beans from the farm roasted every day. You’ll spend one of your days based at Gibbs visiting the famed Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact caldera in the world which is home to more than 30,000 protected animals including black rhino, elephants and black-maned lions.
From Gibbs Farm you head to the Serengeti, undoubtedly the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa. Depending on the time of year, to best witness the Great Migration, you’ll be based at Lemala Ndutu Camp in the Ndutu Conservation Area of the Southern Serengeti (December to March); Lemala Ewanjan Camp in the Central Serengeti (April to June, November to December); or Lemala Kuria Hills in the northern Serengeti (July to October).
Perched on the edge of a permanent marsh, Lemala Ndutu Tented Camp is the ultimate amphitheatre for the wildebeest migration with 12 tents sited to capture the boundless drama. Lemala Ewanjan is a deluxe camp with 12 luxury tents set along the game-rich Seronera Valley, with staggering views of the Serengeti migration, grasslands and sunsets. Lemala Kuria Hills is a permanent lodge offering unrivalled luxury.
In all locations you’ll enjoy morning and evening game drives each day, and the kids can be involved in the acclaimed Lemala Cubs program, where they’ll learn about life in the African bush from the Maasai who live there. Activities range from learning to throw a spear to using a bow and arrow to listening to African fables to cooking traditional dishes to tracking the droppings around the camp and making plaster casts of them.
